Originally an oil painting on canvas, this scene depicts the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. The garden’s famous olive trees are visible in the foreground and the wall of the Old City can be seen in the distance. About the Artist: James Clark

A British architect born in Hartlepool and who studied art in Paris, James Clark had an interest in biblical subjects. He visited Jerusalem in 1886 and 1896 to collect material for an illustrated Bible. He also designed stained glass windows for churches. In 1935 Clark presented the Palestine Exploration Fund with paintings from his two trips to Jerusalem.
